  • The second exam takes place on 15.09.2014 at 1820|201/Fo1 in Kármán-Auditorium from 10:00 to 12:00.
  • Inspection of the HPC exam is on 01.09.2014 in room 2356|056 (5056) from 10:00 to 11:30.
  • The first exam took place on 15.08.2014 at 1820|201/Fo1 in Kármán-Auditorium from 10:00 to 12:00.
  • Tuesday lectures take place in room MeT P 11 from 12:15 to 13:45.
  • Thursday lectures take place in room MeT P 11 from 10:15 to 11:45.
  • Exercises will be held during the lecture time (Thursdays) every second week.

Description

While problems out of the various application fields of natural sciences often can be solved using simple methods, some special and large scale problems that arise in practice require the use of parallel computers of adequate size and computation power. The student is introduced to prevalent methods that apply in the field of high performance computing to cope with these large scale numerical problems. The educational objective is comprehension of essential parallel computer architectures, knowledge of basic optimization strategies for both serial and parallel algorithms and methods for the runtime analysis of parallel applications.

Beschreibung

Während überschaubare Probleme aus den Naturwissenschaften und deren Anwendungen meist durch "einfache" Methoden gelöst werden können, verlangen große in der Praxis auftretende Probleme den Einsatz von adequaten Parallelrechnersystemen. Dem Studierenden werden gängige Werkzeuge vorgestellt, die im Gebiet des High Performance Computing Anwendung finden um dieser numerischen Probleme gerecht zu werden. Lernziele sind das Verständnis der wesentlichen Parallelrechnerarchitekturen, Kenntnisse grundlegender Optimierungsstrategien für serielle und parallele Algorithmen sowie Methoden zur Laufzeitanalyse paralleler Anwendungen.
